A James Butler received the 39th lot in the second division of meadow on 5 Feb 1659 in Lancaster. [Ref] On 2 (12) 1663 James was given a half a home lot, ten acres of upland for half a home lot and another 20 acres of upland for half a home lot. [Ref] On 26 (9) 1664 he was given enough land to make a fence along the seven acres that he bought from goodman Joslin. [Ref]
James was of Woburn in 1676. [Ref, editors]

JAMES BUTLER of Bolton

James Butler married Hannah Wilson on 19 Mar 1723/4 in Lancaster, John Houghton officiated. [Ref]
After the massacre he lived on the land east of Still River that his father had purchased from the Joslins. [Ref] In 1704 James was in a garrison in Lancaster commanded by Capt. Thomas Wilder and John Houghton, Sr.; also in the garrison was Jeremiah Wilson. [Ref]
James was an early member of the First Church of Lancaster on 25 Jul 1708. [Ref, p. 270]
James settled in Bolton in 1718 on land that he bought from Benjamin Houghton. [Ref] James Butler and James Fyfe lived near each other in Bolton, but on the formation of Berlin in 1784, James Fyfe's farm became part of Berlin. [Ref]
