    James moved to Californina. [C] He arrived in San Francisco in 1853 after surviving the burning and sinking of the steamship Independence. For 29 years he supplied the wholesale meat markets of San Francisco. He bought a 10,000 acre ranch in Ventura County. At one time he owned 100 horses, 5000 sheep, 1000 hogs and 600 cattle.
