First Generation

SGT. GEORGE DARROW (d. 1704 or 1706) of New London

Parents:

Sgt. George Darrow seems to have died in 1706, rather than in 1704. [Ref] He married as her second husband Mary Unknown. [Ref, widow Mary Sharswood] Mary died in 1698. [Ref, pp. 347-348] She married first George Sharswood. [Ref, p. 264][Ref]

George Darrow came to New London between 1675 and 1680. [Ref, p. 264]

George and Mary owned the covenant on 6 Aug 1704 in New London. [Ref, 79;126]

Richard Darrow of Branford might be a relation — possibly a son — of George and Mary.

Jonathan Hill, administrator of the estate of George Sharswood of New London, posted a bond on 31 Aug 1704. Inventory was taken on 7 Sep and the only items were a house, a home lot, 50 pounds and a pot. The estate was divided between the heirs of William and Jonathan Hill, in right of his wife Mary. It appears that William was discovered to be alive and on 2 Oct the estate was divided between George's son William and Jonathan Hill. [Ref, 18; 122-3]

  1. Christopher Darrow was baptised on 1 Dec 1678 in New London. He married Elizabeth Packer.
  2. George Darrow was baptised on 17 Oct 1680 in New London. [Ref, p. 453, s. George][Ref, s. George and Mary][Ref, pp. 347-348] He died before 23 Sep 1706, when his widow was granted administration on his estate. [Ref] He married Elizabeth Marshall of Hartford on 10 Aug 1702 in New London. [Ref][Ref] Elizabeth, the daughter of Thomas and Mary (Stebbins) Marshall, was born on 23 Oct 1678 in Hartford. [Ref] She died on 6 or 7 Nov 1726 and was buried on 7 Nov 1726. [Ref] She married second, as his second wife, Peter Hackley on 3 Aug 1708 in New London. [Ref][Ref: The record says "Lydia". Interestingly, this is the same day that Christopher's daughter Lydia was born.] Peter died on 12 Mar 1735/6. [Ref] Peter married first Elizabeth (Waterhouse) Baker on 31 Jul 1699 in the First Church in New London. [Ref] Elizabeth, the daughter of Jacob and Hannah Waterhouse, was born about 1660 or a little later. [Ref] She married first Unknown Baker before 4 Nov 1693. [Ref]
    George and Elizabeth owned the covenant at the first church in New London on 6 Aug 1704. [Ref]
    Inventory on George's estate was taken on 23 Sep 1706 by Christopher Darrow and Joshua Hemstead and it amounted to £ 24.11.10. Elizabeth Darrow of New London was appointed administratrix of her husband's estate and she posted a bond on 1 Oct 1706. Daniel Stebbens of New London acted as surety and they both signed with their marks. [Ref, 10;169-170]
    Elizabeth Marshall, alias Elizabeth Darrow, was discharged from her bond as administratrix of the estate of her brother Benjamin, son of Thomas Marshall, in Sep 1702. [Ref, 2;92] George and his wife owned the covenant on 6 Aug 1704 in the First Church in New London. [Ref] Elizabeth Darrow witnessed a deed on 3 Aug 1708 in New London. [Ref]
    Peter Hackley built a fulling mill at Jordan in 1694. [Ref] Peter and Elizabeth's first child arrived too soon after marriage and they acknowledged the sin of fornication on 15 May 1709. [Ref] Elizabeth Hackley joined the First Church on 16 Sep 1711. [Ref]

  3. Nicholas Darrow was baptised on 20 May 1683 [Ref, s. George] in New London. [Ref, p. 455, s. George][Ref, pp. 347-348] He died on 5 May 1725 [Ref] in New Haven. [Ref, s. George] He married Millicent Beebe. [Ref, s. George] Millicent was the daughter of Thomas and Millicent (Adis) Beebe. [Ref, s. George]
    The widow Millison Darrow and her daughter Mary were baptised on 7 Jun 1741 in New London. [Ref][Ref]

    Jane's baptismal record suggests the existence of another child, perhaps a twin of Jane?

[Ref, 18; 122-3] He married Abigail Unknown. [Ref, pp. 347-348] She married second George Polly of Philadelphia. [Ref, pp. 347-348]

CHRISTOPHER DARROW (bp. 1678) of New London

Parents: George Darrow and Mary Unknown

Christopher Darrow [Ref, s. George] was baptised on 1 Dec 1678 [Ref, eldest s. George and Mary] in New London. [Ref, p. 452, s. George][Ref, pp. 347-348] He married Elizabeth Packer [Ref, d. John, Jr. and Lydia (Latham)] on 27 Jun 1701 in New London. [Ref]

Christopher settled in Waterford, probably on his father's farm, the "Old Darrow Farm". [Ref]

Christopher and Elizabeth owned the covenant on 8 Aug 1703 in New London. [Ref, 79;125] Elizabeth was admitted to the church on 9 Sep 1711 in New London. [Ref, 79;126, w. Christopher]

The Assembly made an addition to the bounds of New London on 13 May 1703. Christopher was one of the people that this land was granted to on 14 Oct 1704. [Ref]

On 11 Jan 1711/2 the Governor and Council agreed to pay Christopher Darrow for "riding post from New London to Rye". [Ref]

On Thursday 14 Feb 1711/2 Joshua Hempstead wrote in his diary that he had been home making a chest for Christopher. On Thursday 25 Feb 1713/4 he agreed with Christopher for a 16th part of the sloop that Samual Edgecomb was building. On 11 Mon Oct 1714 he divided molasses with Christopher. On 14 Aug 1715 he and Darrow went to town and each "shipt" a horse and paid to have it fitted out. On 26 Sep 1727 he received twenty pounds school money and paid it to the "neck school comtee C. Darro & Phil Tabor." [Ref]

Christopher] He married Sarah Haynes in Dec 1726. [Ref] Sarah, the daughter of Jonathan and Sarah (Rogers) Haynes was born on 8 Aug 1708. [Ref]
    On Sunday 5 Mar 1731/2 a contribution was taken for Christopher Darrow, Jr., as his house was burnt. [Ref]
  2. Ebenezer Darrow was born on 12 Aug 1704 in New London. [Ref, s. Christopher and Elizabeth][Ref, s. Christopher] He was baptised on 13 Aug 1704 in New London. [Ref, p. 467, ch. Christopher] He died on 10 Oct 1756. [Ref][Ref][Ref, entry on 12 Oct] The diary of Joshua Hempstead says that on Sunday 10 Oct 1756, "Ebenezer Darrow Died att night aged about 50 I suppose." [Ref] He is buried on the Old Darrow Farm in Waterford. Click here to see a photo of his gravestone. The diary of Joshua Hempstead says (p. 182), that on Sunday 2 Apr 1727 "Ebe Darrow & Abi Rogers published". [Ref] Ebenezer married Abia Rogers on 17 Apr 1727 [Ref] in New London.[Ref, recorded in Lyme][Ref, in the First Church] They published their intention on Sun 2 Apr 1727. [Ref] Abiah, the daughter of James and Sarah (Stevens) Rogers, was born on 28 Mar 1706. [Ref] She died on 11 Mar 1778. [Ref] She is buried on the Old Darrow Farm in Waterford.     Ebenezer and Abiah moved to Lyme, Connecticut and later returned to New London. [Ref]
    Ebenezer signed his will on 6 Jul 1755; it was proved on 18 Oct 1756. He names his wife Abi and his chidren Sarah, Abi, Elizabeth and Zadock. [Ref]

  3. John Darrow was born on 11 Aug 1706 [Ref, s. George] in New London. [Ref, s. Christopher and Elizabeth] He was baptised on 18 Aug 1706 in New London. [Ref, p. 469, unnamed ch. Christopher] John, "late of New London", married Sarah Hanford, daughter of Eleazer, deceased, on 30 Oct 1735 in Norwalk. [Ref]
    This John was "quite likely" the John, late of New Haven, who married on 30 Oct 1735. But, the John who married then could also have been an unrecorded son of Christopher's brother Nicholas. [Ref]

  5. Mary Darrow married John Gibbons on 31 Jul 1734 in Stonington. [Ref] Is she a daughter of Christopher and Elizabeth?
  6. George Darrow was born on 17 Mar 1712 in New London. He married Phebe Palmer.

[Ref] He married second Mary Kendall on 19 Aug 1782. [Ref] He married third Rachel Stiles on 26 Nov 1801 in Windham. [Ref] James and Frances had six children. They were both received into full communion in the Abington Congregation on 16 Oct 1768. [Ref]

[Ref] She died on 25 Feb 1829 in Brookfield. [Ref, p. 145] She married William Palmer of Stonington on 8 Nov 1753 in Stonington. [Ref][Ref, p. 145] William was her third cousin once removed.
