First Generation

ROGER EASTMAN (abt 1613 - 1694) of Salisbury

Parents: Unknown

Roger Eastman was born about 1613. He died on 16 Dec 1694. [Ref, p. 108] He married Sarah Unknown. She was born about 1621, based on a deposition that she was about 50 in 1671. [Ref, p. 108] She died on 11 Mar 1697/8 in Salisbury. [Ref, p. 108]

Roger came to New England on the Confidence. He appears on an 11 Apr 1638 passenger list as a 25-year-old servant of John Sanders, husbandman of Lanford, Wilts. [Ref, p. 113]

Roger received land in Salisbury in 1640 and 1643. [Ref, p. 113] He was a housewright, planter and commoner. [Ref, p. 113] He took the oath of fidelity in 1646 in Salisbury. [Ref, p. 113] He is on an 18 (5) 1652 Salisbury tax list. [Ref]

In 1671, he deposed that he was about 60 and that his daughter Sarah had been born 15 years before. [Ref, p. 113]

By a 20 Mar 1667 deed, Roger gave land and a house to his son John, a husbandman, and his wife Hannah. [Ref, p. 114] By a 28 Dec 1671 deed, Roger, a house carpenter, and his wife Sarah gave a house and land to their son Nathaniel, a cooper. [Ref, p. 114] By a 23 Jun 1676 deed, Roger sold all of his land and his house in Salisbury to his sons Joseph, a weaver, and Benjamin, a tanner. [Ref, p. 114] By a 12 May 1692 deed, Roger gave land to his daughter Sarah Shepherd and her husband Solomon Shepherd. [Ref, p. 114]

In his will, dated 26 Jun 1691 and proved on 2 Mar 1695, Roger Eastman of Salisbury mentions his wife Sarah; his sons John, Nathaniel, Philip, Timothy, Joseph, Benjamin and Samuel Eastman; his deceased son Thomas and his widow Deborah; his daughters Sarah Shepherd and Ruth Heard. [Ref, p. 114-5]

  1. John Eastman was born on 9 Mar 1640/1 in Salisbury. [Ref, p. 115] He died on 25 Mar 1720 in Salisbury. [Ref, p. 115] He married first Hannah Healey on 27 Oct 1665 in Salisbury. [Ref, p. 115][Ref, 2;93 says 7 Oct.] She was probably the daughter of William Healey of Cambridge. [Ref, 2;93] He married second Mary Boynton on 5 Nov 1670. [Ref, p. 115]
    John was a husbandman. He took the oath of fidelity on 11 Dec 1677 in Salisbury. [Ref]

  2. Nathaniel Eastman was born on 18 May 1643 in Salisbury. [Ref, p. 115] He died in Nov 1709 in Salisbury. [Ref, p. 115] He married Elizabeth Hudson on 30 Apr 1672 in Salisbury. [Ref, p. 115]
    Nathaniel was a cooper.
  3. Philip Eastman was born on 30 Dec 1644 in Salisbury. [Ref, p. 115] He died on 20 Oct 1714 in Woodstock, CT. [Ref, p. 115] He had an unknown first wife. [Ref, p. 115] He married second Mary (Barnard) Morse on 22 Aug 1678. [Ref, p. 115] He married third Margaret Unknown about 1695. [Ref, p. 115]
  4. Thomas Eastman was born on 11 Sep 1646 in Salisbury. [Ref, p. 115] He died on 29 Apr 1688 in Haverhill. [Ref, p. 115] He married Deborah Corlis on 20 Jun 1679 in Haverhill. [Ref, p. 115] Deborah, the daughter of George and Joanna (Davis) Corliss was born on 6 Jun 1688. [Ref] She married second Thomas Kingsbury on 29 Jun 1691 [Ref] in Haverhill.   5. Timothy Eastman was born on 29 Sep 1648 in Salisbury. [Ref, p. 115] He died in Apr 1733 in Hadley. [Ref, p. 115] He married Lydia Markham on 16 May 1682 in Suffield. [Ref, p. 115] Lydia was the daughter of William Markham of Hadley. [Ref, 2;93]
  6. Joseph Eastman was born on 8 Jan 1650 in Salisbury. [Ref, p. 115] He died on 4 Apr 1692 in Hadley. [Ref, p. 115] He married Mary Tilton. [Ref, p. 115] Mary was the only surviving daughter of the Hon. Peter Tilton of Hadley. [Ref, 2;93] She married second James Guernsey. [Ref, 2;93]
    Joseph was a weaver. He was of Suffield. [Ref, 2;93] He took the oath of fidelity on 21 Dec 1677 in Salisbury. [Ref]
  7. Benjamin Eastman was born on 12 Feb 1652 in Salisbury. [Ref, p. 115] He died on 23 Jan 1727/8 in Salisbury. [Ref, p. 115] He married first Ann (Pitts) Joy on 5 Apr 1678. [Ref, p. 115] Ann, the widow of Samuel Joy, died on 13 Dec 1698. [Ref, p. 30] He married second Naomi Flanders on 4 Apr 1679 in Salisbury. [Ref, p. 115] Naomi, the daughter of Stephen and Jane Flanders, was born on 15 Dec 1656 in Salisbury and died on 24 Jul 1718 in Salisbury. [Ref, p. 30] He married third Sarah (Brown) Carter on 5 Oct 1719 in Salisbury. [Ref, p. 115] Sarah was the widow of Samuel Carter. [Ref, p. 30]
    Benjamin was a tanner. He took the oath of fidelity on 21 Dec 1677 in Salisbury. [Ref] He was a freeman in 1690. [Ref, 2;93] He signed his will on 13 Aug 1725/ it was proved on 4 Mar 1727/8. [Ref, p. 30]
  8. Sarah Eastman was born on 25 Sep 1655 in Salisbury. She died on 1 Dec 1748 in Salisbury. She married first Joseph French. She married second Solomon Shepherd. [Ref, p. 115]
  9. Samuel Eastman was born on 20 Nov 1657 in Salisbury. [Ref, p. 115] He died on 27 Feb 1725 in Kingston, NH. [Ref, p. 115] He married Elizabeth Scriven or Scribner on 17 Jun 1658 in Salisbury. [Ref, p. 115]

Sarah Eastman was born on 25 Sep 1655 in Salisbury. [Ref, p. 115] She died on 1 Dec 1748 in Salisbury. [Ref, p. 115] She married first Joseph French on 13 Jun 1678 in Salisbury. [Ref] She married second Solomon Shepherd on 4 Aug 1684 in Salisbury. [Ref] Solomon was born about 1650 and died on 7 Jul 1731 in Salisbury. [Ref, p. 103]

A deed refers to Solomon as a blacksmith. [Ref, p. 106]

Joseph died intestate. [Ref, p. 103] The petition 4 Jan 1684 of Joseph French and Roger Eastman, grandparents of Joseph's children, names Sarah and Joseph's children: Joseph, Timothy and Simon. It mentions Benjamin and Nathaniel Eastman, bothers of the widow. Both Joseph and Roger signed with their marks. [Ref, p. 103]

In a deed dated 25 Mar 1685, Joseph French, a tailor of Salisbury, and Susanna his wife, gave land to Sarah French, the widow of their eldest son Joseph, deceased. [Ref, p. 105]

  3. Solomon Shepherd was born on 18 Apr 1691 [Ref, p. 108] He died between 2 Oct 1753 and 4 Mar 1754. [Ref, p. 108] He was unmarried. [Ref, p. 108]
  4. Israel Shepherd was born on 7 Mar 1693 [Ref, p. 108] He died on 23 Apr 1742. [Ref, p. 108] He married Sarah Kimball on 27 Aug 1724 in Salisbury. [Ref, p. 108]
  5. Jeremiah Shepherd was born on 10 Aug 1698 [Ref, p. 108] He died about 1761. [Ref, p. 108] He married Abigail Brown on 30 Nov 1731 in Salisbury. [Ref, p. 108]
