INDEX to the Howard family files
WILLIAM HOWARD (HAYWARD) (c. 1634 - 1709) of Ipswich
Parents: William's origins are unknown. [Ref]
William Howard was born about 1634. He died on 25 Jul 1709, age 75, in Ipswich. [Ref] He possibly married Tabitha Kinsman. [Greene's [Ref] argument suggests that this is possible, and perhaps likely, but not proven.] His name often appears as "Hayward" in the records.
William appears in the Ipswich records in 1670 as William Hayward, a journeyman of Samuel Graves of Ipswich, a hatmaker. [Ref, 4;257][Ref] He "appears to have been a hatter". [Ref] He had "liberty to fall trees" in 1670. [Ref] He is on an 18 Feb 1678 list of commoners in Ipswich. [Ref]
William signed his will on 23 Jul 1709. He mentioned his wife; his sons William, John and Samuel, weavers; his daughters Mary Fuller, Tabitha Hodgkins, Mercy Hovey and Martha Howard; his sister Hannah Howard. [Ref]
William's sister Hannah died in Feb 1725 in Ipswich: "a very antient maid". [Ref][Ref]
His gravestone in the Old North or High Street Burial Ground [Ref] says: Here Lyes ye Body/of William Houeard/who died July ye/25th, 1709& in ye/74 year of his age. [Ref]
William's two-story endgable timber house, build about 1680, is still standing in Ipswich at 41 Turkey Shore Road. [Ref]
Children of William Howard and Tabitha Kinsman:
JOHN HOWARD (abt 1683 - 1744) of Windham and Ipswich
Parents: William Howard and Tabitha Kinsman
John Howard was born about 1683 in Ipswich. [Ref] He died on 2 Dec 1744, age 60 [Ref] and is buried in the Sourth Cemetery in Hampton. [Ref] He married Mary Martin after 22 Feb 1712 (int.) in Ipswich. [Ref]
John Howard and Mary Martin had the following children. Although some of the children are recorded in Windham, they must have all been born in Ipswich.
CAPT. JOHN HOWARD (1716 - 1789) of Windham and Hampton
Parents: John Howard and Mary Martin
Capt. John Howard was born on 15 Feb 1716 in Windham. [Ref] He died on 16 Jun 1789 in Hampton. [Ref] He is buried in the South Cemetery in Hampton; his gravestone says he was 74 and it has a Patriot's Grave marker. [Ref] Click here to see a photo of his grave on the Findagrave website. He married Sarah Bennett on 8 Jan 1740 in Windham. [Ref]
Children of John Howard and Sarah Bennett:
CAPT. WILLIAM HOWARD ( 1749 - 1822) of Windham, Hampton and Ohio
Parents: John Howard and Sarah Bennett
William Howard was born on 7 Jan 1749 in Windham. [Ref][Ref] He died on 18 Jul 1822 [Ref] and is buried the Pioneer Cemetery in Morristown, Belmont, Ohio. [Ref, no cemetery][Ref]. The inscription on his grave says "Capt Continental Line / Revolutionary War". [Ref] He married Phebe Fuller on 10 Apr 1777 in Hampton. [Ref][Ref] William married second Lucy Geer on 3 Dec 1807 in Hampton. [Ref] Lucy, the daughter of William Geer, was born on 25 Apr 1788 in Hampton. [Ref] She died on 14 Nov 1866 in Syracuse, Onondaga, New York and was buried in the Oakwood Cemetery in Syracuse. [Ref]
William was a soldier in the Revolutionary War; he was the captain of a militia company in 1776 and 1777. [Ref]
According to the census, in 1790 William and Phebe were living next to William's brother James in Hampton, apparently with Phebe, Anson, Daniel, Lora, Chloe and eight other people. In 1800 Willliam and Phebe were living in Hampton, apparently with Phebe, Anson, Daniel, Lora, Chloe, Eleanor, Chauncey and three other people. [Ref] In 1810 Wlliam and Lucy were living in Hampton with (perhaps) Chauncey, William and Eleanor and one other child. [Ref]
William owned a fine horse named Roebuck and placed ads in the local paper in 1794 offering his stud services. [Ref] In 1796 an apprentice of William's ran away; William placed an ad offering a reward for his return. [Ref]
William's father, Capt. John Howard had a claim on land in Salem Township, Pennsylvania. In his will, John left a quarter of the land to William, a quarter each to William's brothers James and Nathan and a quarter to the children of William's deceased brother John. On 9 Mar 1808 a certificate was filed in the probate office, Windham District, with an extract from the will. The claimants for the land were William, James, Nathan and John's only surviving heir, his son Vine. [Ref]
Children of William Howard and Phebe Fuller:
The controlling politics was National Republican and then Whig. But opposition to slavery found early supporters amongst us, and a branch of Levi Coffin's `Underground Railroad' passed through the southern part of Union county, the adjoining part of Champaign county, and thence to Canada. The residences of Dr. DAVENPORT and Anson HOWARD, in Rush township, Champaign county, were places of concealment for the poor fugitives, and from them was conducted an active missionary campaign which made sad inroads in the ranks of the Whigs."
