First Generation

SGT. JOHN HOYT (d. 1688) of Salisbury and Amesbury

Parents:

John Hoyt died on 28 Feb 1687/8 in Amesbury. [Ref] He married first Frances Unknown. She died on 23 Feb 1642/3, apparently in childbirth, in Salisbury. [Ref] He married second Frances Unknown.

John took the oath of fidelity on 1 Oct 1650. [Ref, 1;203] He took the freeman's oath on 31 Mar 1663. [Ref, 3;59] He was frequently on the grand jury on 13 Apr 1652 (1;252), 14 Apr 1663 (3;56), 9 Apr 1667 (3;404), 12 Oct 1669 (4;183) and 9 Apr 1678 (6;427). [Ref] He was chosen selectman in Mar 1681/2. [Ref, p. 15] He was moderator of the town meeting in Apr 1687. [Ref, p. 15] He was the sergeant of the Salisbury militia company. [Ref, p. 19]

  4. Thomas Hoyt (twin) was born on 1 Jan 1640/1 in Salisbury. [Ref] He married Mary, the daughter of William and Mary Brown of Salisbury. [Ref, p. 23]
    Thomas Hoyt and Thomas Johnson were admonished and fined on 29 Mar 1664 for being disorderly away fromt heir master Walter Taylor. Walter was fined for cursing his servants. John Hoyt, Sr. was admonished for entertaining his son when he was a servant of Walter Taylor's. [Ref, 3;148]

  2. Mary Hoyt was born on 20 Jan 1648/9 in Salisbury. [Ref] She married Christopher Bartlet on 19 Dec 1663 in Salisbury. [This would make her rather young to be married.]
  3. Joseph Hoyt was born on 13 May 1648 in Salisbury. [Ref] He died on 19 Apr 1648 [!] in Salisbury. [Ref]
  4. Joseph Hoyt was born on 27 Nov 1649 in Salisbury. [Ref] He died on 24 Jan 1649/50 in Salisbury. [Ref]
  5. "Marah" Hoyt was born on 24 November 1653 in Salisbury. [Ref] She died on 1 Dec 1653 in Salisbury. [Ref]
  6. Naomi Hoyt was born on 23 Jan 1654/5 in Newbury. [Ref] [Ref, p. 56] She married first John Lovejoy on 23 Mar 1677/8 in Andover. [Ref, p. 56] He died on 14 Jul 1680 [Ref, 8;56] in Andover. [Ref][Ref, p. 55] She married second Richard Stratton after 1684. [Ref, p. 56] Richard was the son of Samuel and Mary (Frye) Stratton. [Ref, p. 56]
    Naomi Lovejoy, administratrix of her deceased husband's estate, presented his inventory to court on 30 Nov 1680. [Ref, 8;56]
    Naomi Lovejoy was fined for fornication with Benjamin Abbott in Jun 1683. [Ref, 9;59] In 1684, they had an illegitimate daughter [Ref, 9;427] in Andover. [Ref]
  7. Dorothy Hoyt was born on 13 Apr 1656 in Salisbury. [Ref]
    Dorothy was charged with putting on men's clothes. As she had left the county, her father John appeared in court in her stead on 25 Sep 1677. He admitted that she was guilty and said that she was penitent. It was ordered that she be severely whipped when she returned unless her father paid a fine of 40 s. [Ref, 6;341]
  8. Mehitable Hoyt was born on 25 Oct 1664 in Salisbury. [Ref]

Second Generation

JOHN HOYT (c. 1638 - 1691) of Salisbury and Amesbury

Parents: John Hoyt and Frances Unknown

John Hoyt was born about 1638, based on a 29 Sep 1684 deposition that he was about 46. [Ref, 6;339] He died on 24 Aug 1691 in Amesbury. [Ref] He married Mary Barnes [Ref, p. 20] on 23 Jun 1659 in Salisbury. [Ref, Mary's first name is missing and the year is inferred]

John was dismissed from all training until cured of his infirmity on 26 Mar 1667. [Ref, 3;410]

John took the oath of fidelity on 26 Mar 1667. [Ref, 3;407] On the same date, having been chosen by the town of Salisbury to keep the ordinary, he was licensed to sell wine and strong waters for the next year. [Ref, 3;407] His license was renewed on 31 Mar 1668 [Ref, 4;24] and on 13 Apr 1669 [Ref, 4;131]. He was on the trial jury on 9 Oct 1667. [Ref, 6;339]

Dorothy Hoyt was born on 29 Jan 1673/4 [Ref] in Amesbury. [Ref] She died on 17 May 1714 in Andover [Ref], age about 40. [Ref] She married Nathaniel Lovejoy [Ref] on 21 Mar 1693/4 in Andover. [Ref]
