John Johnson was baptised on 6 Jun 1602 in Stepney. [Ref] He died on 30 Jan 1674/5 [Ref] at Cambridge Village (Newton). [Ref does not give the date.] He married Margaret Unknown. She was born about 1624. She died on 28 Aug 1684, age 60. [Ref] He may have had an unknown first wife. Margaret was much younger than John.

Savage [Ref] says that he presumes that John came to New England in the Defence in 1635. This man was age 30 and called a "wholesale man in Burchen lane". [Ref] Savage says that he had a first wife, who died soon after John left for New England and suggests that she may have been the mother of his two eldest daughters.

He bought the estate of Mile Ives in 1639. [Ref] This was a dwelling house and 18 acres on the south side of the Charles river in Cambridge. [Ref]

John was probably a freeman on 10 May 1643, but possibly on 2 Jun 1641. [Ref]

In 1647 it was recorded that 10 acres in Cambridge were laid out to John Jackson and 40 acres to Edward Jackson "adjoining that of his brother John Jackson." [Ref]

In 1656 Dea. John Jackson and Elder Thomas Wiswall petitioned the General Court to be released from paying for the support of the ministry at Cambridge church. [Ref]

By a 25 Mar 1673 deed, John Jackson, Sr. of Cambridge, yeoman, and Margaret Jackson sold land to Daniel Mahey. [Ref]

John was a wealthy man: his estate included 863 acres and was valued at £1230. [Ref] On 16 Feb 1674, administration on his estate was granted to his widow. [Ref] His estate was settled on 20 Dec 1676. His widow Margaret Jackson and his son Abraham Jackson, acting on behalf of his daughters Deliverance Jackson and Sarah Jackson, and James Trowbridge, Noah Wiswall, Samuel Truesdale, Daniel Preston and Elijah Kendricke, acting in the rights of their wives, agreed on a division.

Note: there were other John Jacksons in the early Massachusetts Bay Colonly. John Jackson, who was in Salem in 1637, also had a wife named Margaret. John of Boston came in the Elizabeth and Ann in 1635 and had a wife named Abigail. John of Ipswich is probably the John who was a freeman in 1641; he had a wife named Catherine. [Ref]
