Some Descendants of Experience "Pede" Johnson (Amos, Reuben, Isaac, Lieut. Joseph, Nathaniel, Sgt. Humphrey, John) and Capt. Ebenezer Childs of Farmington, Franklin, Maine

  1. Calvin Newton Childs was born on 15 Jan 1838 [J, p. 272] in Maine. [C1900, Jan 1838] He married Ella Blanchard about 1862. [C1900] Ella was the daughter of Lorin Blanchard. [C1900] She was born in Jun 1843 in Massachusetts. [C1900]
    In 1850 Calvin N. was 12 and living with his parents in Farmington. [C1850] In 1860 C. N., age 22, was living with his Uncle Sumner Reid Johnson's family in Milwaukee and he was working as a clerk in a dry goods store. In 1900 Calvin, age 62, and Ella, age 56, were living in Milwaukee and Calvin was a commercial salesman. They had been married for 38 years and had had no children. Ella's father lived with them.     Calvin was a soldier in the Civil War. [J, p. 272] He enlisted from Madison, Wisconsin in Company D, Wisconsin 40th Infantry Regiment on 19 May 1864. He was mustered out on 16 Sep 1864 at Milwaukee. [CWS]
  2. James Upham Childs was born on 19 Oct 1840. [J, p. 272] James, the son of Ebenezer Childs and Pede Johnson, died on 30 May 1904, age 64, in Farmington of paralysis. [MDR] He married Ellen F. Unknown.
    In 1850 James W. was nine and living with his parents in Farmington. [C1850] In 1870 James, age 29, and Ellen F., age27, were living in Farmington with their daughter. James was a merchant tailor with real estate worth $1,500 and a personal estate of $500. [C1870] In 1880 James was a widower, living in a hotel in Farmington. He described his occupation as "mowing machine ag.". [C1880] In 1900 James, age 59, was living in a boarding house in Farmington. [C1900] James lived in a home for disabled volunteer soldiers in Togus, Kennebec, Maine from 19 Oct 1900 to 22 Mar 1901. He said that he had been a clerk. [NH]
    James was a soldier in the Civil War. [J, p. 272] He enlisted from Farmington as a sergeant on 14 Aug 1862 in Company G, Maine 16th Infantry Regiment. He was promoted to 2nd lieutenant and then to 1st lieutenant. He was mustered out on 5 Jun 1865 at Arlington Heights, Virginia. [CWS]
    James was 5'8" tall with a dark complexion, hazel eyes and black hair. [NH]
    James's sole child must have died young as she does not appear in the 1880 census and in 1900 James lists his brother Calvin as his closest relative [NH].
