JOHN KEEP (d. 1676) of Springfield

Parents: Unknown

John Keep died on 26 Mar 1676 in Springfield. [Ref] He married Sarah Leonard on 31 Dec 1663 [Ref][Ref, p. 680] in Springfield. [Ref]

On 26 Mar 1676, John, his wife Sarah and his youngest son Jabez were slain by Indians. [Ref]

John was one of the inhabitants of Springfield who signed a 1688 petition against duties on imports into and exports out of the colony. [Ref].

John Keep of Springfield is on a 19 May 1669 list of those who did not take the freeman's oath. [Ref]

Samuel Keep was born on 22 Aug 1670 [Ref] in Springfield. [Ref][Ref, pp. 14-17][Ref] Ens. Samuel Keep of Springfield died on 23 Aug 1755 [Ref][Ref, pp. 14-17] in Springfield. [Ref] He married Sarah Colton on 27 Feb 1695 [Ref][Ref, pp. 14-17] in Springfield. [Ref, int. 12 Feb 1695] Samuel and Sarah are buried in the Longmeadow Cemetery in Springfield. Samuel was five when his parents and brother were killed by the Indians. He and his sisters Sarah and Hannah were taken in by his grandmother Leonard. [Ref, pp. 14-17] Later, he was under the care of his uncle Samuel Biss [the husband of his mother's sister Mary Leonard]. [Ref, pp. 14-17]

Immediately after his marriage, Samuel and Sarah settled on Samuel's farm in Long Meadow. [Ref, pp. 14-17] The Long Meadow settlement was located in a valley and the following December there was a great flood that destroyed the settlement and the Long Meadow residents moved from the valley to a hill. [Ref, pp. 14-17]

Samuel was a selectman in 1715, 1716, 1720, 1722 and 1724. [Ref, pp. 14-17] He was one of the petitioners to the General Court for a new town — Brimfield — to be laid out to the east of Springfield in Sep 1700. [Ref, pp. 14-17]

Samuel left no will; he had already given his homestead to his son Samuel. [Ref, pp. 14-17]

[Ref] He married Abigail Munn. [Ref, p. 19] Abigail was the daughter of James and Mary (Moody) Munn of Colchester, Connecticut. [Ref, p. 19] She was born on 17 Oct 1700. [Ref, p. 19] She died on 28 Jul 1757. [Ref, p. 19] Both John and Abigail are buried in Brimfield. [Ref, p. 19]
    John and Abigail settled in Brimfield immediately after their marriage. [Ref, p. 19] John was a fence viewer in 1731. [Ref, p. 19] He was on a committee to lay out a cedar swamp in May 1732. [Ref, p. 19] He was an assessor in 1735. [Ref, p. 19] He was a selectman in 1735, 1749 and 1754. [Ref, p. 19]
    John, yeoman of Brimfield, signed his will on 18 Jan 1757. He mentioned his wife Abigail; his sons Jabez, Simeon and Caleb Keep; his daughter Elizabeth Dart, the wife of John, Abigail Boardman, the wife of Stephen, and Sarah, Eunice and Mary Keep. [Ref, pp. 19-20]

Capt. Jabez Keep was born on 10 Mar 1706 in Springfield. [Ref][Ref][Ref, p. 24, Longmeadow] He died on 19 Aug 1774 in Harvard. [Ref] He is buried in the Harvard Center Cemetery in Harvard. Click here to see a photo of his gravestone. He married first his second cousin Sarah Leonard on 16 Apr 1730 in Springfield. [Ref][Ref, p. 682] Sarah was the daughter of Joseph and Margaret Leonard. [Ref, p. 682] She ws born on 10 Aug 1707. [Ref, p. 682] She died on 9 Mar 1738/9, age 32, in Westford. [Ref][Ref, p. 682] She is buried in the Fairview Cemetery in Westford. [Ref] He married second Experience Lawrence of Littleton on 3 Apr 1740 in Littleton. [Ref][Ref says 3 Feb and that Jabez is of Westford]

Jabez purchased a forge and tools from Samuel Kent of Westford on 29 Nov 1729. [Ref, p. 24] He was on the first tax list of Westford in 1730. [Ref, p. 24] He was a selectman in Westford in 1742, 1744 -1747, 1750 - 1752 and 1754 - 1757. [Ref, p. 24] He was clerk of the board of selectman in 1747 and 1751. [Ref, p. 24]He was a representative to the General Court in 1756. [Ref, p. 24] He is called "Captain" in the records. [Ref, p. 24]

Jabez was on of the grantees of the towns of Walpole, Westmoreland and Chester in New Hampshire in 1752. [Ref, p. 24] He sold his forge and other property in Westford in 1768 and moved to Harvard. [Ref, p. 24]

Dorothy, the widow of Joseph Butterfield of Chelmsford, petitioned for Lieut. Jabez Keep of Westford to be appointed guardian of her children Ebenezer, age about 13, and Dorothy, age about ten, on 8 Dec 1749. [Ref, 44;39]

The inscription on Jabez's gravestone says, "Here lies the remains of Capt. Jabez Keep who departed this life Augt 19, 1774, aged 68 years, 4 months and 28 days." [Ref, p. 24]

Jabez signed his will on 7 Jul 1773. He mentions his wife Experience, his sons Samuel, Jabez, Leonard, Jonathan and John; the heirs of his eldest daughter Sarah Learned; his second daghter Lucy Rogers; his third daughter Lucy Fletcher [should be Eunice, perhaps a transcription error], his fourth daughter Mary Proctor; his fifth daughter Ruth Green; his sixth daugher Bettie Hapgood; his seventh daughter Experience Hildreth; his eighth daughter Jemima; his ninth daughter Rebecca. He named his son Jabez his executor. [Ref, pp. 24 - 25]

    Jabez was a corporal in Col. Timothy Ruggle's regiment and was at the Battle of Lake George in Sep 1755. [Ref, pp. 38-39] He was at Crown Point in 1758. He was in Capt. Jonathan Butterfield's company in the 1760 expedition against Canada. [Ref, pp. 38-39]
    In 1760 Jabez bought a farm in Harvard, Worcester, Massachusetts. [Ref, pp. 38-39] In 1774 he succeeded his father in the trip-hammer forge and bloomery on the brook at Old Mill in Harvard. [Ref, pp. 38-39]
    Jabez was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. On 19 Apr 1775 he was a sargeant in Capt. Jonathan Davis's company, Col. John Whitcomb's regiment that marched on the Lexington Alarm from Harvard to Cambridge. [Ref, pp. 38-39] He was a second lieutenant in James Burt's company, Asa Whitcomb's regiment and was at the Battle of Bunker HIll. [Ref, pp. 38-39] He was a second lieutenant in Capt. Hezekiah Whitney's company, Col. Josiah Whitney's regiment. [Ref, pp. 38-39]
    Jabez was a selectman in Harvard 1783 - 1784. [Ref, pp. 38-39]
    Jabez's wife left him in 1784 and joined the Shirley Shakers (external link) with five of her daughters. [Ref, pp. 38-39]
