THOMAS SAUNDERS (d. 1609) of Lydeard St. Lawrence

Parents: Thomas was perhaps the son of the William and Joan Saunders who were buried on 11 Jan 1584/5 and 14 Mar 1579/80, respectively, in Lydeard St. Lawrence. [Ref]

Thomas Saunders was buried on 11 Jun 1609 in Over Stowey. [Ref]

Ann Blake was born about 1552, probably at Over Stowey. [Ref] She was living on 26 Mar 1609, when her husband made his will. [Ref] She married Thomas Saunders on 3 Aug 1573 in Over Stowey. [Ref]

  1. Joan Saunders was baptised on 23 May 1577 in Lydeard St. Lawrence. [Ref] She married Thomas Wrentmore on 3 Oct 1597 in Lydeard St. Lawrence. [Ref]
  2. Agnes Saunders was baptised on 22 May 1579 in Lydeard St. Lawrence. [Ref]
  3. Lawrence Saunders was baptised on 11 Jan 1580/1 in Lydeard St. Lawrence. [Ref] He was buried on 23 Jan 1590/1 in Lydeard St. Lawrence. [Ref]
  4. Robert Saunders was baptised on 10 Nov 1582 in Lydeard St. Lawrence. [Ref]
  5. John Saunders was baptised on 10 Nov 1582 in Lydeard St. Lawrence. [Ref] He probably died by 26 Mar 1609, as he was not mentioned in his father's will. [Ref]
  6. Elizabeth Saunders was baptised on 20 Dec 1584 in Lydeard St. Lawrence. She died on 5 Jul 1655 in Windsor. She married Hon. Henry Wolcott.
  7. Thomas Saunders was baptised on 30 Oct 1586 in Lydeard St. Lawrence. [Ref]
  8. Christopher Saunders was baptised on 24 Jan 1588/9 in Lydeard St. Lawrence. [Ref] He was buried on 14 Mar 1623/4 in Lydeard St. Lawrence. [Ref]

HENRY WOLCOTT (1578-1656)

Parents: John Wolcott and Agnes Cross

Henry Wolcott was born in England in 1578. [Ref] He died on 30 May 1656 in Windsor. [Ref] He married Elizabeth Saunders on 19 Jan 1606/7 in Lydeard St. Lawrence.

The Wolcotts arrived in New England on the John and Mary in 1630. [Ref] They settled first in Dorchester. [Ref] Henry was made freeman on 19 Oct 1630. [Ref] He was an assessor there in 1630 and a selectman in 1634. [Ref]

They Wolcotts moved to Windsor, where Henry was constable in 1636, tax collector in 1637/8 and on the committee to build a highway between Windsor and Hartford in 1654. [Ref] He was the deputy to the Connecticut General Court for Windsor in Apr 1639. [Ref] He was an Assistant in 1644-5. [Ref]

Henry signed his will on 13 May 1655 in Windsor; it was proved on 4 Oct 1655. Henry Wolcott was made freeman on 19 Oct 1630. [Ref] He mentions an unnamed wife, his eldest son Henry, his second son Christopher, his third son George and his youngest son Simon.

Children of Henry Wolcott and Elizabeth Saunders:

  1. John Wolcott was baptised on 1 Oct 1607 in Lydeard St. Lawrence. [Ref] He died before 13 May 1655. [Ref] He was living in England in 1631. [Ref]
  2. Henry Wolcott was born say 1616. [Ref] He died on 12 Jul 1680 in Windsor. [Ref] He married Sarah Newberry on 8 Nov 16 __ (probably 1641). [Ref] Sarah was the daughter of Thomas and Jane (Dabinott) Newberry. [Ref]
  3. Christopher Wolcott was born say 1619. [Ref] He died unmarried on 7 Sep 1662 in Windsor. [Ref]
    In his noncupative will, he divided his estate among his siblings, except Henry whom he did not want to have more than the rest. [Ref]
  4. George Wolcott was born say 1622. [Ref] He died between 19 Jan 1622/3, when his will is dated, and 12 Feb 1622/3, when inventory was taken on his estate, probably in Wethersfield. He married Elizabeth Unknown by 1649. Elizabeth was said to be the daughter of Richard Treat. [Ref]
  5. Anne Wolcott was born say 1624. She married Lieut. Matthew Griswold.
  6. Mary Wolcott was born say 1626. [Ref] She married Job Drake on 25 Jun 1646. [Ref] Job was the son of John Drake. [Ref]
  7. Simon Wolcott was born say 1630. [Ref] He died on 11 Sep 1687 in Windsor. [Ref] He married first Joanna Cooke on 19 Mar 1656/7. [Ref] Joanna was the daughter of Aaron Cooke. [Ref] She was baptised on 5 or 15 Aug 1638 in Windsor. [Ref] She died on 27 Apr 1657 in Windsor. [Ref] He married second Martha Pitkin on 17 Oct 1661 in Windsor. [Ref] Martha was the daughter of William and Elizabeth Pitkin. [Ref] She was baptisesd on 12 Dec 1639 in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, England. [Ref] She died on 13 Oct 1719 in East Windsor. [Ref]

Elizabeth Saunders was baptised on 20 Dec 1584 in Lydeard St. Lawrence, co. Somerset. [Ref] She died on 5 Jul 1655 in Windsor.[Ref] She married Henry Wolcott on 19 Jan 1606/7 in Lydeard St. Lawrence. [Ref]

ANNE WOLCOTT

Parents: Henry Wolcott and Elizabeth Saunders [Ref]

Anne Wolcott was born say 1624. [Ref] She was living on 21 Nov 1699 when there was a distribution of her husband's estate. [Ref] She married Lieut. Matthew Griswold. [Ref]

Matthew and Anne gave their granddaughters Sarah and Anna Colton of Springfield a gift of land "which fell to us by decease and gift of Mr. Christopher Wolcott". [Ref]

Anne and her son in law Lieut. Brunson were administrators of Anne's husband Henry's estate. [Ref]
