The Hutchinson family was from the market town of Alford in Lincolnshire. [Ref] The immigrants to New England from this family were an aged widow, her four middle-aged sons and her daughter, married to the Rev. John Wheelwright. [Ref] It is believed that Edward accompanied Mr. Cotton in the Griffen, arriving in Boston in Sep 1633. [Ref] The rest of the family arrived in the same ship a year later. [Ref] The family immediately purchased land at Boston and also purchased large amounts of land elsewhere from the Indians. [Ref]

Unknown was the father of John, who was the father of Edward, who was the father of William, wife of the famous Anne. William was the father of Bridget.

Bridget Hutchinson was baptised 15 Jan 1618/19 at Alford . [Ref] She married John Sanford.

EDWARD HUTCHINSON (abt 1564 - 1632)

Edward Hutchinson was born about 1564 in St. Mary le Wigford in Lincoln. [Ref] He was buried on 14 Feb 1631/2 in Alford. [Ref] He married Susan (Susanna) Unknown.

The Corporation of Lincoln recorded: "Edward Hochynson, son of John Hochynson, Alderman, deceased, enrolled apprentice to Edmund Knyght [his uncle], Alderman and Merchant of Lincoln for eight years from the Feast of Pentecost 19 Elizabeth [Ref says "say the 27th of May 1577"]." [Ref]

Edward left no will. [Ref]

Susanna went with her daughter Mrs. Wheelwright to Wells, ME and died there in 1642. [Ref]

[Ref] He died between 17 Apr 1667, when he signed his will in Boston, and 16 Jul 1667, when it was deposed. [Ref] In his will he refers to his sister Wheelwright, his cousin Peleg Sanford; his cousin Elizabeth Hutchinson; his cousins Restraw, William, Ezbon and Elisha Sanborn; his cousin Edward Hutchinson and his children; Edward, Katherine and Hannah Hutchinson; his cousin Susan Cole; his cousin Bridget Willis; Abigail, Sarah and Samuel Bath; Elefall Stratton; his cousin Willis of Bridgeport; his cousin Eliakim Hutchinson; his brother Edward; Elizabeth Hutchinson, Ann Diar and Susan Hutchinson.   10. Edward Hutchinson was baptised on 20 Dec 1607 in Alford. [Ref] He married Sarah Unknown. He left no known children. [Ref] He went to Newport, but returned to England. [Ref] Sarah was admitted to the first church in Boston in 1663. [Ref] Edward Hutchinsons appear on the 4 Mar 1633/4 and 3 Sep 1634 lists of freemen. One of these, at least, must be his nephew. [Ref]

JOHN HUTCHINSON (d. 1565)

John Hutchinson died on 24 May 1565 at 4:00 in the morning and was buried the same day in the Church of St. Mary le Wigford in Lincoln. He married first Margaret, probably last name Browne. [Ref] He married second Anne Unknown. She had been married at least once before as she refers to children not with John in her will. [Ref] She was proably Edward's mother; she refers to him in her will as "her son".

He was apprenticed on 23 Sep 1529 to Edward Atkinson of Lincoln, glover, for seven years. [Ref] He was Sheriff of Lincoln on Sep 1547. [Ref] He was an alderman on 11 Apr 1556. [Ref] He was mayor in Sep 1556. [Ref] On 21 Oct 1558 and again on 2 Oct 1561 he was Justice of the Peace. He was mayor again in Sep 1564 and he held this office until his death. [Ref] His will of 21 Apr 1564 indicates he had considerable property. [Ref]

  1. William Hutchinson was buried on 14 Jan 1583/4 at St. Mary Wigford's in Lincoln. [Ref] He married Margaret Sisson on 26 Aug 1565 at St. Mary Wigford's in Lincoln. [Ref] Margaret was buried there on 3 Jun 1580. [Ref] In his will he mentions his brothers John, Arthur, Edward; his sisters Alice and Mary; his brother-in-law Edmund Knight. [Ref]

  5. Jane Hutchinson probably died before 1583. [Ref] She married Edmund Knight, afterwards alderman of Lincoln. [Ref] He was buried on 10 Sep 1584. [Ref]

  2. Mary Hutchinson married George Freeston, yeoman, on 13 Sep 1578 at St. Peter at Gowts, Lincoln. [Ref] She had four children.

Unknown Hutchinson was probably of Lincoln and of humble origins. [Ref]

  1. Christopher Hutchinson died between 18 Nov 1554, when he signed his will, and 8 Jul 1556, when it was proved. [Ref] He identified his sister and three brothers in his will. [Ref]He was a clergyman instituted to the church of Leasingham on 6 Aug 1552 and the church of Scremby on 22 Oct 1526, both in Lincolnshire. [Ref]
  2. Thomas Hutchinson had a daughter Margaret; nothing else is known about him. [Ref]
  3. William Hutchinson died between 4 Jan 1656/7, when his will was dated, and 6 Mar 1656/7, when it was proved. [Ref] He married Dorothy Unknown. [Ref] She died in 1592. [Ref] After William's death she married Thomas Raithbeck of Horncastle. [Ref]He had three sons and three daughters. [Ref]He was a citizen and alderman of Lincoln. [Ref] He was sometimes called a glover. [Ref] In 1540 he was appointed to collect certain monies on behalf of the corporation of Lincoln. [Ref] In Sep 1541 he was a Sheriff of the city. [Ref] In Mar 1545 he was an alderman. [Ref] In Sp 1555 he was mayor. [Ref] He mentions his brother John, his sister Remington and her husband, and his brother Thomas's daughter in his will. [Ref]

  5. Alice Hutchinson died between 19 Feb 1559/60, when she signed her will, and 27 Mar 1567, when it was proved. [Ref] She married James Remington of Branston, near Lincoln. [Ref] He died between 10 Jan 1558/9, when he wrote his will and 18 Feb 1558/9, when it ws proved. [Ref] Their wills suggest that their position in life was very humble. [Ref]

WILLIAM HUTCHINSON (bp. 1586) of Alford and Boston

William Hutchinson was baptised on 14 Aug 1586 in Alford. [Ref] He married Anne Marbury on 9 Aug 1612 in the church of St. Mary Woolnoth. The Registers of the United Parishes of St. Mary Woolnoth and St Mary Woolchurch Haw say under St. Mary Woolnoth marriages in 1612, "Aug 9 William Hutchinson of Alford, co. Lincoln, mercer , and Anne, daughter of Francis Marbury, Minister, by license." [Ref]

He was churchwarden in 1620/1 in Alford. [Ref]

He was admitted freeman soon after he arrived in Boston. [Ref] He was a delegate from Boston to the General Court in 1635. [Ref] That same year he was a member of the committee to allot land in Boston and the vicinity. [Ref] He contributed to the formation of a grammer school. [Ref] With his brothers Richard and Edward, William signed the remonstrance against the sentence of banishment pronounced on his brother-in-law the Rev. John Wheelwright. [Ref] As a result of this they were ordered to surrender their arms to the authorities. [Ref] The family moved to Rhode Island. [Ref] He was one of the first magistrates of Rhode Island and he resided their until his death.

  1. Capt. Edward Hutchinson was baptised on 28 May 1613 at Alford. [Ref][Ref] He married first Catherine Hamby about 1640.[Ref] He married second Mrs. Abigail Button. [Ref]
    Edward went to Rhode Island with his family. [Ref] He is on the 4 Mar 1633/4 and 3 Sep 1634 lists of freemen. [Or, one of these may be his uncle.] [Ref] He returned to England to marry his first wife and immediately returned to Massachusetts. [Ref] He was chosen representative from the town of Boston to the General Court. [Ref] In 1658 when the law regarding Quakers was passed, he and Maj. Thomas Clark, both representatives, announced their dissent. [Ref] In 1665 Edward headed a petition in favour of the Baptists, and secured a stop to their persecution. [Ref] During King Philip's War he was chosen to command a corps of cavalry sent to meet Philip at Brookfield; he was shot in August 1675 and died on his way home to Marlboro, where he was buried. [Ref]
