Hingham, named after the town in Norfolkshire where many of its early colonists came from, was incorporated in 1635. In 1635 Rev. Peter Hobart and others from Hingham in Old England arrived. In 1638 the Diligent brought a further 133 settlers from old to new Hingham. Hingham was originally part of Suffolk County, but when the southern part of Suffolk County became Norfolk County in 1793, Hingham became part of Norfolk. In 1803, Hingham chose to become part of Plymouth County.
