Barnard was chartered on 17 Jul 1761 to William Story, Frances Barnard and their associates.

An emigration from Hardwick to Barnard commenced in the spring of 1775. Settlement began in Mar 1775 by Thomas Freeman, his son William, and John Newton. That spring, Lot Whitcomb, Nathaniel Paige, William Cheedle and Asa Whitcomb moved into the town. Thomas Freeman, Jr. arrived on 7 Jun 1775. All of these men were from Hardwick, except possibly William Cheedle.
