GOV. PELEG SANFORD (1639 - 1701) of Newport

According to his half brother John Sanford, Gov. Peleg Sanford was born on 10 May 1639 in Portsmouth, RI. [Ref] He died between 28 Feb 1700/1, when he signed his will, and 1 Sep 1701, when it was proved. [Ref] He married first Mary Brenton. [Ref] Mary was the daughter of Gov. William Brenton of Newport. [Ref][Ref] He married second Mary Coddington on 1 Dec 1674. [Ref][Ref]

On 17 Mar 1739/40, Mary Coddington's sister Anne Willett of North Kingstown, age about 78, deposed that she remembered Mary, the first wife of Col. Peleg Sanford and daughter of Gov. William Brenton, who died without surviving children sometime before her father. [Ref]

On 17 Dec 1661, William Brenton, merchant of Newport, gave a power of attorney to Peleg Sanford of Newport to be his attorney in Barbadoes to collect what was due to him there. [Ref] In 1663-4, Peleg and his brothers William and Elisha conducted business in Barbados. [Ref] Peleg returned to Newport and was a freeman there on 2 May 1666. [Ref] Peleg carried on a large business, shipping wool and horses from New England to Barbados, sugar from Barbados to London and English goods from London to New England. [Ref] He was appointed captain of a troop of horses on 24 Jul 1667. [Ref] In 1668 he was imprisoned in Boston for debt, but a bond was posted by his uncle Edward Hutchinson. [Ref]

Peleg was a large landowner in Jamestown, RI. [Ref] He had houses at Black Point and Newport. [Ref] On 18 Nov 1673 Sarah Reape, Benedict Arnold, Sr., Caleb Carr, Peleg Sanford and Thomas Ward signed an order to Joseph Borden, Roger Goulding, Elisha Sanford and Josiah Arnold in Barbados to sell the ship Joanna and Sarah. [Ref On 9 Apr 1675, John Champlin, merchant of Newport, sold land of John Garde to Peleg Sanford, merchant of Newport. [Ref 82;70]

In his will of 17 Apr 1667, his great uncle Samuel Hutchinson left Peleg his orchard and land in Portsmouth, RI. [Ref]

On 11 Aug 1676, during King Philip's War, Capt. Benjamin Church and and Capt. Goulding were at Peleg's house in Black Point and Peleg and Capt. Goulding told Church that King Philip was at Mount Hope. Peleg accompanied Capt. Church to the fight at Mount Hope where Philip was killed. [Ref]

On 24 May 1677 Peleg was chosen one of two agents to go to England to represent the colony of Rhode Island in its boundary dispute with Connecticut. [Ref] He was General Treasurer of Rhode Island in 1679-81. [Ref] He was Major of the Rhode Island military forces in 1679. [Ref] He was governor of Rhode Island [Ref] 1680 - 1683. [Ref] He was judge of admiralty under King William. [Ref] He was appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the Rhode Island military forces in 1687. [Ref] He was a "very prominent merchant at Newport". [Ref]

In her will of 29 Sep 1696, his mother left him huge tracts of land that her second husband had left her. [Ref]

In his 28 Feb 1700/1 will, he named Francis Brinley, Nathaniel Coddington and Andrew Willett his executors and the guardian of his minor children, Peleg, William, Bridget and Elizabeth. He left his wife Mary a third of his plate; household goods and three negro slaves. He left his eldest son Peleg two houses in Newport; 450 acres at Winnequot; 160 acres and all his lands on the Merrimac River and his lands in Saco given to him by his mother; 573 acres on the Elizabeth Islands; several tracts at Portsmouth; one eighth of his plate. He left his younger son William two tracts of land totalling 546 acres; other land; one eigth of his plate. He left Peleg and William jointly land in Newport; half of Rose Island in Narragansett Bay; a tract of 1020 acres. He left his eldest daughter Anne 50 acres and a house; he left his daughter Bridget 60 acres; he left his daughter Elizabeth 90 acres and £8. He left each daughter an equal share of the remaining plate. He left a bequest to his sister Eliphal Stratton and mentions William Stratton, deceased; he left bequests to his nieces Mary Brinley, Mary Cole and Katherine Vernon. [Ref]

The town of Sanford, York, ME is named after Peleg. [Ref]

1. Anne Sanford married first Dr. James Noyes of Stonington. [Ref] She married second Capt. John Mason [Ref, 15;119] of Stonington on 15 Jul 1719. [Ref]
2. Bridget Sanford died before 14 Jan 1766. [Ref] She married Maj. Job Almy of Tiverton, RI on 6 Dec 1705. [Ref] Job was the son of Maj. Almy of Tiverton. [Ref]
3. Elizabeth Sanford was born about 1685. She died on 23 Oct 1762. She married Capt. Thomas Noyes.
4. Unknown daughter Sanford [Ref] apparently died young.
5. Unknown son Sanford [Ref] apparently died young.
6. Peleg Sanford was born about 1685. [Ref] He died in Oct 1702 [Ref just gives the year, at age 17] in Boston and is buried in the King's Chapel Burial Ground. [Ref] He left no children. [Ref]
7. William Sanford, Esq. was born about 1690. [Ref] He died on 24 Apr 1721 [Ref], age 31. [Ref] He is buri d in the Common Burial Ground at Newport. [Ref] He married Griselda Sylvester on 1 Mar 1713/4 [Ref] in Newport. [Ref] Griselda was the daughter of Nathaniel and Margaret (Steers) Sylvester. [Ref says her mother is Margaret Hobart][Ref] Griselda was of Shelter Island, NY. [Ref] She married second Rev. Nathaniel Cotton of Bristol, RI. [Ref] Nathaniel received his AM from Harvard in 1717. [Ref]
   William graduated from Harvard in 1711 [Ref], receiving both degrees at the top of his class. [Ref] His daughter Margaret married Thomas Hutchinson, the royal goveror of Massachusetts and prominent loyalist.

ELIZABETH SANFORD (abt 1685-1762)

Elizabeth Sanford was born about 1685. She died on 23 Oct 1762. [Ref] Elizabeth Stanton of Newport married Capt. Thomas Noyes of Stonington on 3 Sep 1705 in Newport. [Ref][Ref]

Her gravestone, next to her husband's in the ancient cemetery in Stonington says:

IN MEMORY of/ELIZABETH ye wife/of Capt. THOMAS/NOYES who died/Oct ye 23d 1762/aged about 77 years. [Ref]
