George Jones was born about 1572. [Ref] He died between 30 Apr 1626, when he signed his will, and 20 Nov 1626, when it was proved. [Ref] He married Agnes Unknown. [Ref]

George was of Dinder. [Ref] He was an inn keeper. [Ref] He was a church warden in 1621. [Ref]

In his will, George mentioned his wife Agnes, his son Richard and his daughters Dorothy and Elizabeth. [Ref]

    Anthony was a minister in England. He was curate at St. Edmund Salisbury 1631 to 1635. [Ref, pp. 14-22] He was a tailor and an innkeeper. [Ref, pp. 14-22]
    Anthony and Elizabeth left for New England in Apr 1635 [Ref] on the James. [Ref, pp. 14-22] They settled first in Salem, then in Marblehead and then in Yarmouth. [Ref] Anthony took the oath of fidelity on 7 Jan 1638/9. [Ref, pp. 14-22] He was made a freeman on 3 Dec 1639. [Ref, pp. 14-22] He was deputy to the General Court for Yarmouth many times. [Ref, pp. 14-22]
    In Aug 1635 Anthony and Elizabeth joined Anthony's cousin Rev. Joseph Avery in moving to Marblehead. Caught up in the Great Colonial Hurricane of 1635, the entire Avery family and Anthony's four children from his first marriage who had accompanied Anthony and Elizabeth to New England drowned. Only Anthony and Elizabeth survived. [Ref, pp. 14-22]

RICHARD SEARS (c. 1598 - 1676) of Plymouth, Marblehead, Essex, Massachusetts and Yarmouth

Parents: Unknown

Richard Sears was born about 1598. He died on 5 Sep 1676, age 81 years and four months. [Ref, pp. 1642-4] He married Dorothy Jones about 1635. [Ref] "Desier Seeares was buried the 26th of August 76" in Yarmouth. [Ref]

Richard's name is on a Plymouth tax list of 25 Mar 1633. [Ref, p. 23][Ref]

Richard was taxed in Marblehead on 1 Jan 1637/8 and on 14 Oct 1638. [Ref, p. 23] He was granted four acres in Marblehead "where he had formerly planted". [Ref, p. 23]

In 1639, a party uner the leadership of Richard's brother-in-law Anthony Tacher settled in Yarmouth. Richard took up residence on Quivet Neck. [Ref, p. 24] Richard was on the 1643 list of inhabitants of Yarmouth between 16 and 60 able to bear arms. [Ref, p. 28][Ref] He was propounded a freeman on 3 Jun 1652. [Ref, p. 28] He was chosen grand juryman on 7 Jun 1652. [Ref, p. 28] He took the oath of fidelity in Plymouth on 7 Jun 1655. [Ref, p. 28] He was a tax collector on 1 Mar 1658/9. [Ref, pp. 1642-4] He was chosen constable on 6 Jun 1660. [Ref, p. 28] He was chosen to a representative to the General Court on 3 Jun 1662. [Ref, p. 28]

On 2 Oct 1650 Richard was one of a large group of men who brought a slander suit against William Nickerson. [Ref, pp. 1642-4]

On 23 Nov 1664 Alice Bradford, the widow of William Bradford, late of Plymouth, sold Richard Sears of Yarmouth two pieces of land containing 40 acres at a place called Sasuet for twenty pounds. [Ref, 34;22] Sasuet was an Indian name for a place then in east Yarmouth and now in Dennis an Brewster.

"Richard Sares of Yarmouth" signed his will on 10 May 1667 and there was a codicil on 3 Feb 1675/6. The will was proved on 5 Mar 1675/6. Richard mentions his wife Dorothy; his elder son Paul; his younger son Silas; his son-in-law Zachariah Paddock and Zachariah's wife Deborah and son Ichabod; his brother Thatcher. The will was witnessed by Anthony Thatcher and Anthony Frey. Inventory was taken on 8 Oct 1676. It was presented at court by Dorothy and Paul on 15 Nov 1676. It was untotalled and included a house and lands valued at 220 pounts. [Ref, pp. 1642-4]

  1. Paul Sears was born about 1637. He died on 20 Feb 1707/8 in Yarmouth. He married Deborah Willard.
  2. Deborah Sears was born about 1639. [Ref, pp. 1642-4] She died on 17 Aug 1732 in Yarmouth "within about one month of 93 years of age". [Ref, pp. 1642-4] She married Zachariah Paddock by 1661. [Ref, pp. 1642-4] Zachariah was the son of Robert and Mary Paddock. [Ref, p. 32] He was born on 20 Mar 1636 in Plymouth. [Ref, p. 32]
    Deborah was admitted to the Second Church in Yarmouth from the First Church on 6 Aug 1727. [Ref, p. 32]

  3. Lieut. Silas Sears [Ref] was born say 1641. [Ref, pp. 1642-4] He died on 13 Jan 1697/8 in Yarmouth. [Ref] He married Anne Unknown. Anderson says that Anna was probably the daughter of James Bursell of Yarmouth [Ref, pp. 1642-4] but May says that there is no evidence of this. [Ref, p. 49] Hannah [Anna?] Sears, the wife [widow?] of Lieut. Silas Sears died on 4 Mar 1725/6 in Yarmouth. [Ref]
    Lieut Silas lived in that part of Yarmouth that is now East Dennis. [Ref, p. 49] He was propounded freeman on 6 Mun 1682. [Ref, p. 49] He was commissioned ensign on 28 Oct 1681. [Ref, p. 49] He was commissioned lieutenant on 7 Jul 1782. [Ref, p. 49] He was a representative to the General Court 1685 to 1691. [Ref, p. 49] He was a selectman 1680 to 1694. [Ref, p. 49] He was a juryman 1680 to 1682. [Ref, p. 49]
    Anna Sears, the relict of Lieut. Silas, swore to his undated unventory on 2 May 1698. On 5 May 1698 she was appointed administratrix of her husband's estate. He had died intestate and on 5 May his estate was divided between Anna, his eldes son Silas and his other children Richard, Hannah, Joseph, Josiah, Elizabeth and Dorothy. [Ref, 32;165]

PAUL SEARS (d. 1708) of Yarmouth

Parents: Richard Sears and Dorothy Jones

Paul Sears was born about 1637. [Ref, pp. 1642-4] Paul Sears, Sr. died on 20 Feb 1707/8 in Yarmouth. [Ref] He married Deborah Willard in 1658 in Yarmouth.

Paul Sears, Sr. of Yarmouth, ill and weak, signed his will on 20 Feb 1707/8. He left his eldest son Samuel all of his land and meadow in Harwich. He was to pay his mother Deborah one third of the profits for her life. He left his son Paul a piece of fresh meadow called Green meadow. He left his son John all of the rest of his homestead. He was to pay his mother Deborah one third of the profits for her life. Samuel was to pay Richard and Daniel 42 pounds and Paul and John were to each pay Richard and Daniel 44 pounds. This was so that they could purchase land at Monomoy. He left all of his moveable estate to his wife Deborah. She was to leave it to their daughters, who had already been given portions, upon her death. Samuel and Deborah were to be the executors. The will was witnessed by John Thatcher, Zachariah Paddack and Capt. Samuel Howes. On 8 Apr 1708 John Thatcher, Esq., Zachariah Paddack and Capt. Samuel Howes proved the will and Samuel Sears swore to the inventory of about 466 pounds. [Ref, 3;217-9]

On 10 Jun 1679 Maj. William Bradford released all his rights to Paul Sears in land at Sesuet that his mother had sold to Richard Sears, deceased, late of Yarmouth, father of Paul Sears. [Ref]

[Ref, pp. 517-8][Ref, pp. 53-54] Mercy was the daughter of Samuel and Tamsin (Lumpkins) Mayo of Yarmouth and the granddaughter of John Mayo of Eastham.
