JASPER RIDDLESDALE (RYDYSDALE) (prob. abt. 1490 -
1552) of Boxford
Parents: Unknown
Jasper Riddlesdale was probably born about 1490. [Ref]
He died between 29 Aug 1552, when his will was dated, and 15 Sep 1552, when
it was proved. [Ref] He married Elizabeth
Unknown. [Ref] She died after 30 Oct 1552,
when she made her will, and 13 Apr 1553, when it was proved. . [Ref]
Jasper was a husbandman. [Ref] He was
a churchwarden in Boxford in 1542-3 and 1547-8. [Ref]
He was paid for loads of straw, gravel and lead drawn to the church during 1540
- 1550. [Ref] In 1541 he held organise
a church ale (fete). [Ref] He bought a
blue linen table cloth from the church for two shillings. [Ref]
He rented a "town howse" at Hagner from the church. [Ref]
In addition to his wife, children and grandchildren, Jasper mentions his sisters
Agnes, Christine Egle and Margery Scott and his kinswoman Alice Bygg in his
will. [Ref] Elizabeth mentions her sister
Rose Benet and her son-in-law Thomas Ryvet. [Ref]

says that her sons Robert, Richard, John and William are under 21.]
- Henry Riddlesdale was buried on 25 Jun
1591. He married Joan Unknown. His parents wills suggest that he, or possibly
Thomas, was the eldest son.
- Thomas Riddlesdale married Joan Unknown. [Ref]
She married second Lancelot Mayor on 5 Oct 1567 in Boxford. [Ref]
Thomas's father left him his house and land called Dove's in Boxford. His
mother left him four pounds and her best kirtle.
- Peter Riddlesdale had married and had a son by 1552. In his will, his father
forgives Peter the five marks that he owes him and left him £3. 6s.
8d. He left Peter's son Thomas two sheep. His mother left him four pounds,
her second white cap and best black sleeves. [Ref]
- Grace Riddlesdale may be the daughter who married Richard Keble by 1552.
Her father left her four pounds. Her mother left her three pounds, to be distributed
within three years, and her second gown and broad black hat.
- Elizabeth Riddlesdale may be the daughter who married Thomas Ryvet by 1552.
Her father left her four pounds. Her mother left her three pounds, to be distributed
within four years, and her best red petticoat and best red cap.
- Jane Riddlesdale's father left her four pounds. Her mother left her three
pounds to be distributed within five years, and her best gown and tawny damask
sleeves.
- Amy Riddlesdale might have been Jane's twin. Her father left her four pounds.
Her mother left her three pounds to be distributed within five years, and
her second red petticoat.
- Robert Riddlesdale was under 21 in 1552. His father stipulated in his will
that Henry was to pay him £10. His mother left him six pounds and a
calf in six years.
- Richard Riddlesdale was under 21 in 1552. His father stipulated in his will
that his son Thomas was to pay him a total of £20 in installments before
he turned 21. His mother left him six pounds and a calf in seven years.
- John Riddlesdale was under 21 in 1552. He was buried on 5 Dec 1614 in Groton.
[Ref] He married Elizabeth Patten on
29 Nov 1562 in Boxford. [Ref] He had
several children. His father stipulated in his will that his son Thomas was
to pay him a total of £10 in installments before he turned 21. His mother
left him six pounds and a calf in eight years.
- William Riddlesdale married Joan Johnson on 2 Nov 1561 in Polstead, co.
Suffolk. [Ref] His father left him his
house and land called Osmonds in Polstead after the death of his mother. His
mother left him six pounds and a calf in nine years.
Second Generation
HENRY RIDDLESDALE (d. 1591) of Boxford
Parents: Jasper Riddlesdale and
Elizabeth Unknown
Henry Riddlesdale was buried on 25 Jun 1591. [Ref]
He married Joan Unknown. [Ref] She outlived
him. [Ref]
His father left his wife Elizabeth and Henry his farm and Boxford
and all of his corn, hay, horses, sheep and cattle. His mother left him the
residue of her estate, as well as her besk silk hat and her best white cap;
he was the sole executor of her will. [Ref]
Henry was paid 6 d. by the church wardens for carriage of a load
of wood in 1555 in Boxford. [Ref] He helped
organise a church ale in 1560. [Ref] He
was church warden in 1562. [Ref] At the
time he wrote his will, he was leasing a house called Coddenham Hall. [Ref]
In his will, signed 20 Jun 1591 and proved 9 Dec 1591, Henry calls
himself a yeoman of Boxford. He left his son John £14, his son Robert
his corn, his sons Henry and Richard each £60, his daughter's son John
Stanbye £10 at 21, the widow Agnes Church 10 shillings and his wife Joan
the residue.

JOHN RIDDLESDALE (bp. 1557 - 1629) of Bures St. Mary
and Assington

John Riddlesdale was baptised on 26 Sep 1557 in Boxford. [Ref]
He was buried on 4 Jun 1629 in Assington. [Ref]
He married Dorcas Unknown. [Ref] She was
buried on 24 Sep 1624 in Assington. [Ref]
John is referred to as of Bures St. Mary. [Ref]
Dorcas was probably related to John Vigorus of Langham, Essex. [Ref]
John and Dorcas sold a ten-acre close, two five-acre closes and one two-acre
close to John Gryme the Elder of Assington and his wife Faith for £120
on 3 Jan 1613/4. [Ref] On the same day,
Dorcas released her interest in land leased in Jun 1555 for 500 years by John
and Robert Gurdon to John Vigorus the younger, clothier of Langham. [Ref]
Children of John Riddlesdale and Dorcas Unknown:
- Susan Riddlesdale was baptised on 20 Apr 1584
in Boxford. She died in Aug 1658 in Ipswich. She married Thomas
French.
- Richard Riddlesdale was buried on 6 Nov 1610 in Assington. [Ref]

of whose husbands were named, on 28 Feb 1610/1. [Ref]

He was buried there on 9 Feb 1630/1. [Ref]

He died between 23 Nov 1665 and 26 Dec 1665 in Ipswich, MA. [Ref]
